Beach Access Closed at Beacon’s Beach Due to Reactivated Landslide

Post Date:04/29/2024 4:00 PM

UPDATE POST: APRIL 29 AT 5:21PM

A contractor has been hired to repair the Beacons Beach trail damaged by the landslide. Work to repair the trail has begun and is anticipated to take several weeks. The trail will reopen when repairs are complete.

UPDATED POST: FEBRUARY 21 AT 8:19AM

In late January, we found an area of the walkway adjacent to the bluff in the Beacon’s Beach parking lot that was undermined and had to be closed off for public safety. The temporary fencing was adjusted to block off 20 feet of the walkway. The consultant geotechnical engineer continues to monitor Beacon's Beach bluff failure and damages to the pedestrian walkway and trail access. The landslide remains active and therefore, the trail access and portions of the walkway will remain closed to the public.

UPDATED POST: JANUARY 11 AT 6:53PM

During the early morning of January 10, 2024, the northern portion of an existing natural historic landslide at Beacon’s Beach reactivated and moved downslope to the west. The movement created numerous visible cracks in the existing slope as well as damage to the existing access trail.

The area has been active historically and is currently unstable and unsafe. From time to time, the City has repaired the access trail. Effective immediately, the beach access trail is temporarily closed and the beach area around the trail should be avoided by all persons until further notice. The City discourages residents and visitors from breaching the current fence or entering this unsafe area. The parking lot will remain open at this time, but may be closed if conditions worsen. The City will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.

Residents and visitors that typically access the beach via the switchback trail are prohibited from using the trail until both the landslide monitoring is complete and access is granted again by the City of Encinitas.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
